You will see a pattern similar to an Improved Cylinder constriction choke on paper, but because of the patented "stud ring" inside the tube, there is a much shorter shot string.
      • You can shoot any type slug out of a smooth bore barrel, but there is debate on accuracy when using a choke or rifled choke. A Foster slug or what some call an America slug, is designed for a smooth bore barrel. The slug has a deep hollow in the back that allows the center of gravity to be in the front.
      • Many popular slug guns come in packages that include a short, rifled barrel for slugs, and a longer smooth-bore barrel for shooting bird shot. Better to have a shotgun that’s dedicated to slug shooting. If you switch barrels, every time you switch back to the slug barrel, you need to re-sight the weapon.

      • Barrel length and slugs. Some shooters think that short barrel is a "slug barrel" and that long barrel is more suited for birdshot than slugs. But in my experience, you can shoot slugs accurately using the long barrel too. My test proved that long barrel is good and sometimes even better than short barrels.

      • Hope you all don't mind me reviving this old thread of mine, but have another question, and again another assumption that all would be fine? With the Slug Barrel mounted on this Shotgun, I assume there are no problems running Shotshells through this gun if one chose to? Not so much birdshot, but I'm basically referring to heavy 2-3/4" 00 Buckshot.
      • It's the shotgun you can afford that delivers the performance you demand. Maverick 88 pump-action models are fully-interchangeable with Mossberg 500 barrels (within gauge and capacity). • Aug 28, 2016 · As a rule? Yes. However, there are some make/models that say not to shoot slugs out of. If your weapon has a removable choke, pretty sure you'd need to remove it before firing slugs.
      • If you are shooting further than this with a shotgun chances are you're using slugs and should be using a rifled barrel with rifle type sights. At least this is what I've always been told about the use of ghost rings. Personally my mossberg has the plain brass bead on the top of the barrel.
      • You can shoot slugs through cylinder and IC, probably through modified, and you risk bulging the barrel if you shoot slugs through a fixed-choke barrel. Smoothbore threaded choke barrel = barrel with a removable choke. You can swap out choke tubes (they're a few inches long and thread into the end of the barrel) to meet the situation.

    • Jul 18, 2016 · Then you'll have a little left over for those that are "just out of reach" that you decide to shoot at anyway --- I mean, the ones that you uhm, mistake the distance on, yeah. The problem with slugs is that, even though they really put the smack down ft*lb-wise at the muzzle, they lose velocity really fast compared to "real" bullets.

      • You've got to get the sights on the critter before you can make the shot and I've found that a short barreled, open sighted, Remington 870 rates right up there with a Marlin Guide Gun for snap shooting. With one ounce soft lead slugs, if you get a solid hit on a deer, it will normally knock it to the ground where it's hit.
      • Jun 23, 2016 · Ron, you don’t need to change out the barrel or choke to shoot slugs. You can shoot ANY shotgun ammo through a modified choke…there will be no issues. Just keep in mind that some buckshot or slugs might group tighter with an IC choke.

      • Before investing in a rifled barrel or a new shotgun, give the new Federal Truball slugs a try in your smoothbore barrel. They are reported to improve accuracy big-time over standard rifled slugs at similar cost per round. If you do go with a rifled barrel, you'll need to use sabot slugs to get the best accuracy.
      • If you are getting that kind of performance out of a smooth bore barrel with Remington Sluggers, I wouldn't change a thing. That is about the cheapest shooting setup you can get with a slug gun. Return that rifled bore barrel and have at it with the sluggers.

      • The blunderbuss, arquebus, and musket all had their place in early shotgun history for their incredible close-range firepower and moving-target effectiveness, but were limited to rough shot and out-of-round steel being shot out of their 4 ½’ to 5 ½’ smooth bore barrels. • My slug alloy = ~1/3 pure lead and ~2/3 reclaimed #2 shot. Buckshot alloy = 100% reclaimed #2 shot, which, by the way, has a measured hardness of slightly softer than wheelweight alloy. With the 18-hole 000 buckshot mold you see here, it took exactly 22 minutes to empty the 10-lb pot.

      • A little pricy but 150 to 200 yard shots no problem. I would steer away from the lead rifled slugs if you have a rifled barrel. These slugs are not designed to be shot through a rifled barrel. the soft lead fills in the rifleing of the barrel and ruins the barrel by turning it into a smooth bore.
      • I have seen rifled barrels become smooth bores after shooting rifled slugs. Most of the rifled slugs rifling is the opposite of the rifling in the barrels which means the lead will dig into the groves in the barrel.I have worn out brushes trying to get the lead out for people
